North American Birds

These birds live in the Columbus Zoo's North American aviary. I visited April 20.

I blew the focus, but how could I not publish Jolene? She's a snow goose.

Cedar waxwing. Mmmm.

White-faced ibis, complete with a white face (breeding plumage). These guys (there are two) are pretty photogenic, and I've gotten good shots of them over the last few years.

Wood thrush

Black-capped chickadee. Or a Carolina chickadee.

Snowy

I went to the Columbus Zoo twice in January, right after snows.

Snow goose. I was surprised to learn that some aren't white.

White faced ibis. My best shot of the two trips.

Reindeer. The Columbus Zoo has three, all female.

Anana and Aurora. I don't know which is which, but the one on the left was already asleep when I arrived. The other moseyed over, dug herself a comfy spot, and closed her eyes.

Red panda. This could be Kora, the mom; Kora spends a lot of time in a tree. I found that a camera's autofocus might not work well when it's snowing.

Red panda. This one was doing laps around the enclosure.

Cedar waxwing

The cedar waxwing is my favorite songbird. They're named for their interest in the berries of cedar trees and the red spots on their wings that apparently look like sealing wax. A previous post includes a shot that shows the wing nicely. All pictures are from the Columbus Zoo's songbird aviary.

Molting, apparently

Columbus Zoo July 22

My visit was actually July 23, but "three" doesn't rhyme with "zoo."

The signage says common ostrich, but the website says blue-neck ostrich.

Saddle-billed storks dance.
At the Columbus Zoo, North America is adjacent to Heart of Africa, so it was no trouble to walk.

A cedar waxwing. This is one of my favorite birds because of its cool sunglasses and jaunty hairdo.

A scarlet tanager, in nonstandard plumage. These guys are supposed to be red all over with black wings. Females are yellowish.

Caterpillars on the bald eagle enclosure. I hadn't noticed these, but another visitor pointed them out, and the white ones were crawling all over the fencing.
